English language learner programs often face a double challenge: ELL students as a group have unique needs, but not every ELL student is at the same stage of learning, and each student has different needs and abilities. ACCESS features a patented method of online differentiated instruction that meets every student one-on-one, with:
Grade-appropriate content differentiated to each student’s individual reading level, with 12 levels in English and 8 in Spanish
Native-language supports and linguistic scaffolds for Spanish-speaking students, including text-to-speech and bilingual dictionaries, built into every lesson
Targeted strategies for every lesson to further differentiate instruction and build reading, vocabulary, comprehension, writing, and discussion skills
Point-of-use teacher recommendations, lesson plans, and on-demand professional learning customized for the instructional needs of ELL programs
Optional courses with accompanying teacher resources that focus on phonics and fluency to build students’ English language skills
A strategic curriculum aligned to Utah’s grade-level standards for language arts, science, and social studies
SAGE Smart courses for practice with test-taking skills and building proficiency with technology-enhanced items to help ELL students succeed on the SAGE
Specific Scaffolds and Supports for ELL Instruction
ACCESS further supports key literacy skills with learning scaffolds and instructional resources designed just for ELL programs, including:
Vocabulary, to help students build their academic and cross-disciplinary word bank using graphic organizers, animated songs and videos, flashcards, and picture dictionaries
Fluency, using Read Aloud lessons and other activities to improve students’ reading and speaking skills, monthly assessments, oral reading rubrics, and system-generated reporting
Comprehension, using Just for Me lessons with unit overviews to target language and phonics skills, vocabulary flashcards and songs, prereading activities, a highlighting tool to aid in close reading, Reading Connections for summarizing and generating questions, and Setting the Purpose to aid in close reading and capturing evidence
Writing, using sentence and paragraph frames, online writing practice, text-editing tools, “include in your answer” prompts, and rubrics, to guide students to put their thoughts in words and create shared meaning around a topic as part of a peer review process
Discussion, using sentence frames to indicate agreement, disagreement, or mixed agreement, listening and speaking rubrics, social feeds, and ideas and talking points in the Teacher Edition, all with a goal to encourage students to share their thoughts about the readings and use new vocabulary, integrating our new research-based Read-Discuss-Read model, created in partnership with Dr. Douglas Fisher
ACCESS teachers will receive targeted training and explicit instructional resources, such as direct-instruction lesson plans and skills progression guides, to ensure full support of the literacy routine and students’ use of learning scaffolds.

Assessments to Track and Accelerate Language Development
It’s essential to know the reading level of each English language learner so educators can use the knowledge of where they are now to understand how far they have to go to meet college and career readiness targets. Students start ACCESS by taking the built-in LevelSet™ pre-test, which quickly establishes their baseline Lexile® reading level in English or in Spanish and helps to place them in the program. Interim tests and post-tests provide a summative measure of student growth for the semester or school year.
Throughout the year, ACCESS’s embedded assessments continually monitor student progress so educators can be sure their English language learners are experiencing accelerated growth. The formative Lexile assessment is embedded within the instructional routine. This allows the adaptive content system to automatically adjust text complexity to meet students’ evolving abilities while pinpointing skill gaps and recommending lessons for additional practice so educators can reteach or reinforce them without taking away from instructional time.
Developed in conjunction with MetaMetrics®, creators of the Lexile Framework for Reading, LevelSet is the only universal screener for the reading comprehension of nonfiction text in both English and Spanish.
Data to Support and Accelerate Literacy Growth
Data from ACCESS’s summative and formative assessments fuel the powerful, real-time reports found in the Teacher Edition, putting reliable, relevant, actionable data at teachers’ fingertips for informed decision-making so they can:
Pinpoint essential reading comprehension and vocabulary skill gaps with the Skills Progression Report and adjust instruction with resources for additional practice on each skill
Track students’ mastery of the Utah Core Standards and forecast their readiness for the SAGE
Identify which students are on track for college and career readiness targets—and which need extra support to achieve grade-level goals
School and district leaders can easily monitor their ELL programs, compare classrooms, and spot trends over time using the data in the Leadership Edition, including charts and graphs that make it easy to assess the health of implementations at a glance and 21 key metrics with critical data and clear action steps for maximizing results.
Proven to Accelerate Language and Literacy Gains
Only Achieve3000 has a 17-year track record of accelerating reading gains for students of all ages and ability levels. In fact, a nationwide study measured English language learners’ reading gains over the course of the 2016-2017 school year and found that:
With standard instruction, ELL students were expected to gain 98 Lexile points
Using Achieve3000 just twice per week, ELL students gained 282 points, nearly triple their expected growth in a single school year!
In addition, an independent, gold-standard randomized controlled trial study found that:
Learning gains of students who used Achieve3000 were statistically significant and substantively important on the GMRT-4 Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, and Total Reading tests
Achieve3000 is significantly more effective in increasing student reading gains than standard English language arts programs
