Accelerate Literacy Gains for Every English Learner
All English language learners, from beginner to advanced, can meet International’s grade-level standards and prepare for college and career success with Access from Achieve3000®. Available for Grades 2-12!
English language learner programs often face a double challenge: as a group, ELL students have unique needs – but frequently are at different stages of learning, with very different skill sets and ability levels. Access leverages a patented method of online differentiated instruction to meet every student one-on-one:
The same grade-appropriate content is tailored to each student’s reading level and learning needs
Lessons feature multiple sources of nonfiction text, differentiated at 12 levels in English and 7 in Spanish
Native-language supports and linguistic scaffolds for Spanish-speaking students, including text-to-audio and bilingual dictionaries, are built into every lesson
Specially designed 8-Step Literacy Routine builds reading, vocabulary, comprehension, writing and discussion skills
Optional courses focus on phonics and fluency to build students’ English language skills
Strategic curriculum is aligned to International’s grade-level standards for language arts, science and social studies
SBAC Challenge courses help ELL students practice test-taking skills and build proficiency with technology-enhanced items to help them succeed on the SBAC
Specific Scaffolds and Supports for ELL Instruction
Access’s 8-Step Literacy Routine builds on Achieve3000’s signature 5-Step Literacy Routine with three additional steps through speaking, listening and writing:
Vocabulary for building a bank of academic and cross-disciplinary terms in both English and Spanish
Discussion for using new vocabulary words in authentic ways and building oral fluency
Writing for creating shared meaning around a topic as students work through the peer review process
Access further supports key literacy skills with learning scaffolds and instructional resources designed just for ELL programs:
Comprehension: Pre-reading activities, highlighting tool (for close reading), Reading Connections (for summarizing and generating questions), Setting the Purpose (for close reading and capturing evidence), Just for Me lessons (for developing reading strategies using science and social studies content)
Writing: Online writing practice, text-editing tools, sentence starters, paragraph frames, “include in your answer” prompts, rubrics to guide student writing
To ensure Access teachers can fully support the expanded literacy routine and students’ use of learning scaffolds, they receive targeted training and explicit instructional resources such as direct instruction lesson plans and Best Practice videos.

Assessments to Track – and Accelerate – Language Development
It’s essential to know the level of each English language learner – where they are now, and how far they have to go to meet college and career readiness targets.
At the beginning of Access, students take the LevelSet™ pre-test, which quickly establishes their baseline Lexile® reading level in English or in Spanish and places them in the program
As students complete lessons, they take short assessments that are embedded right in the instructional routine
These formative Lexile assessments continually monitor student progress without reducing instructional time
Based on this information, the adaptive content system adjusts text complexity accordingly to keep learners at the “just right” level of instruction
LevelSet interim and post-tests then provide a summative measure of student growth for the semester or school year
Developed in conjunction with MetaMetrics®, the developers of the Lexile Framework for Reading, LevelSet is the only universal screener for the reading comprehension of nonfiction text in both English and Spanish.
Data to Support – and Accelerate – Literacy Growth

Proven to Accelerate Language and Literacy Gains
Only Achieve3000 has a 15-year track record of accelerating reading gains for students of all ages and ability levels. In fact, a nationwide study measured English language learners’ reading gains over the course of the 2014-2015 school year and found that:
With typical instruction, ELL students were expected to grow 76 Lexile points
Using Achieve3000 as little as twice per week, ELL students grew by 148 points – double their expected gains in a single school year!
Moreover, a third-party organization conducted an independent, gold-standard randomized control trial of Achieve3000 and found that:
Learning gains of students who used Achieve3000 were statistically significant and substantively important on the GMRT-4 Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension and Total Reading tests
Achieve3000 is significantly more effective at increasing student reading gains than standard English language arts programs
Effect sizes met the What Works Clearinghouse threshold of 0.25 in all areas
