“There are several levels of text-dependent questions. We think about them as a progression of questioning. We start at the literal level. These questions are general understanding questions and key detail questions. They force the reader to look for evidence from a text that is right there.” –Dr. Doug Fisher
On Day 12, Dr. Fisher introduces the value of text-dependent questions and the progression of questioning across different levels. Literal questions are the focus in this session. The goal is to use these types of questions to drive students back into the text to identify evidence and develop their skills with comprehension of complex text.
Revisit the text and teaching points from the previous session.
Using the teaching points as your guide, write at least four literal questions that will push students back to the text to find evidence. List the literal questions in this template.
After mapping out your teaching points and crafting literal questions, consider using the Learning Log to reflect on the process.
This template can be used across multiple sessions to help guide the development of literal, structural, and inferential questions, and progression into inspirational tasks.
This log can be used to capture new learnings as you develop close reading techniques.
