Hawkins Literacy Center Opens in Indianapolis

Amory Middle School Students Boost Reading Scores

Amory, Mississippi (May, 7, 2009) - Students at the Amory Middle School who raised reading scores by nearly two grade levels were treated to a special end-of-year celebration. At the school's Power of Technology awards ceremony, district officials and Amory Mayor Howard Boozer presented ninety-two students and their teachers with the Reading & Writing Award for their academic success.

National Literacy Centers to Support Children of Color

Indianapolis, IN (May 4, 2009) - A new partnership between the National Council on Educating Black Children (NCEBC) and Achieve3000® will launch the new Augustus F. Hawkins Literacy Centers, where students can access enhanced instructional literacy support during after-school and summer programs. Each of the Centers will work to boost overall literacy levels for students at risk of academic failure, specifically for students of color. This is the first national initiative of its kind to deliver coordinated literacy support with a common set of goals, resources and curricula.

Hawaii Schools Recognized for Achievement at 2007 Literacy Leadership Conference

HONOLULU, HI - Hawaiian schools were recognized for outstanding achievement in reading at the 2007 Literacy Leadership Conference, held in Honolulu today. The event, which was sponsored by leading educational software company Achieve3000, focused on the outstanding success of 18 Hawaiian schools. By integrating technology into literacy instruction, local students and educators achieved significantly higher than average scores in reading on the Hawaii state HSA exams.

TeenBiz Creates Buzz in Class

The Post Standard, Syracuse, NY (Monday, March 12, 2007) Chittenango Middle School teachers have spent the past two months encouraging their pupils to use the Internet during class.

Last week, Principal Linda Llewellyn and reading teacher Linda Ceilly showed the school board a new Web-based reading program, TeenBiz, which the school began using in January. The program uses current events and news articles to improve pupils' reading comprehension, and rewrites each article for different reading levels based on a computerized and teacher assessment, Ceilly said. The program also allows pupils to e-mail each other and their teacher and provides immediate feedback to pupils and teachers, she said.
